10 Basic Skills A Newbie Blogger Need To Be Successful

Many bloggers who become successful today started from somewhere like a newbie too. In fact, most of them don't have the kinds of skills you imagine them to have. Many of them were neither great programmers nor website developers. Yes! They only had the basic skills required by a newbie to become a successful blogger, and that's one of the reasons they are successful today.

Have you also wondered what kinds of skills you need to have (or try to learn) if you would like to be a successful blogger? You have just landed on the right page as the next paragraphs would be based on the basic skills you need as a newbie blogger.

#1. Basic computer skills

Have you heard an aspiring blogger said he doesn't know how to use the computer? Seriously funny! How does he want to do it?

You need to know the basic computer skills like:

Using the mouse and keyboard
Using the word processor (example, Microsoft Word)
Using the web browser and the internet (example, Chrome)

Fully knowing these basics will give you the opportunity to be able to open a blog, type your content and publish. Without these, you cannot be a blogger let alone a successful blogger.

#2. Reading and writing skill

Oh yeah... You need to be able to read and write if you want to be a successful blogger. Having the ability to read and write, as it is used in this context means that you must be able to comprehend whatever you read, and also, be able to think and write correctly.

Check all the top blogs that appear when you search for a keyword on a search engine and find out

the authors of these blogs. You will observe that these bloggers are well-educated personalities.

Although most might not be like that when they started blogging, I bet many of them had the ability to read and write, as it was explained above.

Having this ability will give you much confidence to write on any topic that you have chosen.

  • Tip >> The only way to be a great writer is by reading and writing consistently. Read top posts on your niche and master the way the posts are written.

#3. Research skill

Many newbie bloggers come to the blogosphere without this skill, and this is the worst thing ever. You want to stand out as a successful blogger but can't do research huh? It's better you back off.

Successful bloggers are those who have time to research well before they start to write their own posts.

Having this ability gives you more morale to write rich content posts that the readers and search engines love.

Making a research on a particular post exposes you to many new things that you have no idea about. Doing this consistently will make you a guru in no time.

  • Tips >> Use search engines to do research; open many web pages; read many articles online; read books; and finally, learn from your research.

#4. Content writing skill

To be a successful blogger, you must provide your readers long and meaningful contents - contents that solve problems. This way, you're adding value to yourself.

How lengthy can you write meaningful content on a topic? Long posts tend to boost your page rank on Google, and thereby, gaining more traffic and popularity.

This is one of the basic skills you need to have to be successful at blogging.

  • Tips >> You don't need to have written or published a book. All you need here is still research. Do research about your niche and how it works with the content you would be writing.

#5. Basic HTML and CSS skill

I'm not saying you need to be enrolled in a school to have this skill, or that you need to be a programmer before you become successful in blogging. But, you need to know the basics of HTML and CSS.

Or how do you intend to handle it, if, by luck, an advertiser contact you for advertisement placement on your blog?

Or you have a little error on your template?

Or you want to add new features to your blog design?

Or you need it for SEO purposes such as the title tag and the likes?

Whichever one it is, you still need to have this skill. You need to be familiar with some HTML and CSS tags and their functions and correct placements.

  • Tips >> Learn the basics of HTML on websites like w3schools.

#6. Graphics designing skill

One of the things that categorize a blog as standard is the presence of quality graphics and images designs in blog posts. I stated here, the ways through which blog post images help me reduce bounce rate.

After being told that a picture worth a thousand words, many bloggers go to the extent of using images, they found on search engines directly on their blog posts without fearing the implications of copyright.

It is much advisable for newbie bloggers to have graphics designing skill because it really helps blogs look standard.

  • Tips >> Watch YouTube videos on graphic design and practice consistently.

#7. Basic SEO skill

Whatever post you publish on your blog, you would want people to read. So, you need traffic. As a newbie blogger, you will be curious about traffic - where to get the maximum, mainly organic (or free) traffic.

But did you know?

With less effort, you could be getting organic traffic to your blog with the use of SEO? This is why you need to know the basics of SEO.

Wait! Do you know what SEO means?

SEO literarily means Search Engine Optimisation. It is used to monitor and improve the amount of traffic (or visitors) you get from search engines like Google and Bing.

As a beginner, you don't need to be an SEO  expert. Only the basics of SEO  is required.
  • Tip >> Research more about search engine optimization (SEO) and read books by SEO experts.

#8. Self - discipline

Are you the type that got distracted with things you find interested, but not relevant to your field? Thus is indiscipline, and blogging(as a career) don't give room for this.

If you want to be a successful blogger, you must be self-disciplined. You must be able to set goals for yourself and make sure you work towards the goals within the timeframe.

#9. Patience

In case you've never heard of this, blogging is not a quick rich business. You gotta work extremely with passion before you start to see the result.
newbie bloggers' quotes
As a newbie, you don't need to judge your success by the amount of income you realize. You may never make a dime for a longer period of time, even if you work so hard. You may never get positive feedbacks from your readers even you provide vibrant, helpful and informative content. So patience, as a skill, is needed to be successful.

The patience bloggers of yesterday become today's successful bloggers.

  • Tips >> Don't be fed up by negative feedbacks you see on your blog. As long as you do things right, it will definitely pay one day.

#10. Consistency

Consistency is a trait and also a skill a newbie blogger needs to possess if he wants to be a successful blogger. Doing things consistently makes you perfect.

Over time, consistency gets you noticed by your potential audience. When consistency and self-discipline are practiced, it almost guarantees you becoming a successful blogger.

  • Tips >> You can learn consistency by subjecting yourself to various works related to your niche.

Conclusion:

You are a newbie blogger, and you don't have these skills? You gotta spend a lot before you get yourself a blog that would make you succeed.

Why I said this?

If you don't have each of the skills mentioned above, you tend to subject yourself to paying a higher price while you run your blog as a newbie for hundred years.

Would you want to pay freelancers to write articles for you on your blog? Would you also pay graphics designers? Would you hire SEO experts too? What of template editors?

Try to acquire almost all these skills, and you watch yourself becoming a successful blogger.
