Do you treat your employees as your brother/sister, and not your slaves? Are you friendly enough to them?
Are they free to walk up to you anytime they feel like, for any issue. Do you intentionally overlook some of their mistakes? Or you abuse and curse them when they make slight errors?
Most of all these are qualities that your staff need in you that motivate them. Try and be a good leader, and not a boss to your staff .
Most stingy entrepreneurs do not know that their staff are watching them. As the goods go out, the money comes in, they help you to calculate your gain. They know how much you make on each good/service rendered.
Then why will you delay their wages when it is due? When they work for you, pay when it is due.
I once worked with a man who always paid us on time. And I remembered how this habit motivated me in doing his work well. Even though if your pay is small, once agreed with your employee, pay as at when due. It motivates staff.
When your staff notice you that you have no/little idea about the service you render or the products you sell, they begin to become lazy in some aspect. This is simply because there may NOT be enough query about "why haven't you done this?", "why is this one here?".
You should be an intelligent person. Acquire much idea about your product. Be superior to them in terms of knowledge, about what you sell. It motivates staff.
One of my bosses that I've had, when he did things with intelligence, it always inspired and motivated me. I always said kudos to him. Always let your staff see you as a knowledgeable person.

You may not even raise their salary before they call you a " nice man". Buy goodies for them sometimes.
Imagine one of your staff come to meet you for a financial need for #200. Do not reply "Don't i pay your salary?". Give him more than he needs; make him happy.
Who knows what you do will make him remember you everytime he lays his hand on your works?
Always reward each for their good deeds. They will see this in you and will be motivated.
